About this wine

VEUVE CLICQUOT ROSÉ

The pink version of the Champagne everyone knows — and, to my mind, even more of a treat. When someone wants to celebrate with something instantly recognisable and properly delicious, this is where I point them.

Veuve Clicquot has been making Champagne since 1772, and its rosé carries all the boldness the house is famous for. Pinot Noir leads the blend and gives it its backbone, with Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay alongside, and a good measure of the house’s own red wine folded in for that gorgeous colour and depth. It is built on dozens of different crus and a generous share of reserve wines.

In the glass it is a bright, warm rose-gold. Aromas of red and black fruits — cherry, strawberry, raspberry — with hints of spice, brioche and toasted pastry. The palate is generous and full, with sappy red fruit, a savoury citrus edge and that firm Pinot Noir structure carrying a long, fine-bubbled finish.

A joy with charcuterie and cured ham, salmon and tuna, duck, or red-fruit puddings. Honestly, though, it needs no excuse — chilled, on its own, whenever there is something to toast.

Meet the winemaker

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin

Veuve Clicquot has been making Champagne since 1772, but it was the widow herself — Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, la Grande Dame — who put the house on the map, inventing the riddling table and running the whole operation with a fearlessness centuries ahead of her time. That boldness still runs through everything they make, and the rosé is one of the great crowd-pleasers of Champagne.
