A thrilling, cult little Riesling with a Douro twist behind it — bone-dry, electric and completely alive. One of those bottles I get quietly excited about.
Fio is a lovely collaboration between Philipp Kettern in the Mosel and the Niepoort family of Portugal — Dirk and his son Daniel — bringing a natural, hands-off philosophy to German Riesling. Grown on the steep slate slopes of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, it is fermented slowly and bottled bone-dry (trocken), unfined and unfiltered, with barely a whisper of sulphur. The result is Riesling stripped right back to its purest, most electric self.
In the glass it is a pale, bright straw. A fragrant, unmistakably Riesling nose of zesty citrus and ripe peach, with beeswax, white flowers and a wet-stone minerality. The palate is firm, steely and racy — lemon and tart green apple, a honeyed hint of ripeness, and a tangy, saline, mineral finish. Bone-dry and thrillingly fresh.
Beautiful with all things from the sea — oysters, sushi, ceviche — or with spicy Thai and Vietnamese food, where its racy acidity really sings.
