A rare, saline white made from Trapadell — an almost-vanished Marina Alta grape — grown right on our doorstep near Teulada. Exactly the kind of local treasure I love championing.
Atrapat comes from Celler Les Basses, a beautiful eighteenth-century finca and old riu-rau in Teulada, where they have rescued historic local varieties by replanting the oldest clones left in the comarca. It is 100% Trapadell, from biodynamic, dry-farmed vines on the white limestone marls around the Cabo de la Nao, cooled by the sea. Fermented in stainless steel and then rested six months on its lees in clay amphorae (tinajas), with native yeasts and barely any sulphur — minimal-intervention winemaking that lets the place speak.
In the glass it is a pale straw. A fresh, saline nose of orchard fruit and citrus with white flowers, herbs and a distinctly maritime, mineral lift. The palate is dry and taut, with a gentle textural weight from the amphora and lees ageing, ripe fruit and a savoury, salty, mineral finish. Unmistakably of the coast.
Made for the sea — grilled fish, prawns, oysters, a good arroz, or a plate of local cheeses.
