Carmelo Rodero: A Journey Written in Grape Ink
A HISTORY WRITTEN WITH GRAPE INK
Carmelo Rodero started working the vines in Pedrosa de Duero at the age of 13. For decades he bought vineyard after vineyard and sold his grapes to some of Ribera del Duero’s most respected wineries, before bottling under his own name in 1991. Today his daughters run the bodega: Beatriz as winemaker and María leading sales. The wines have become a benchmark for the region.
One night only. Five wines, from the bottle you open on a Tuesday to the ones collectors hunt down. Tapas pairings with every pour.
Alfonso Martínez is coming down from the bodega to take us through the range, including a 100-point single-vineyard Tempranillo. It’s your chance to taste wines at this level before deciding whether they belong in your cellar.
🍾 THE LINEUP 🍾
🥂 9 Meses 2024 — Carmelo Rodero, Ribera del Duero
The way in. Nine months in barrel (that’s where the name comes from), so you get youthful fruit with a little spice from the oak. The house style without the ceremony.
🥂 Crianza 2023 — Carmelo Rodero, Ribera del Duero
Fruit from different parts of Ribera blended together. The Guía Gourmets named it the best Crianza red of 2025, and this vintage scores 98 in Guía Proensa and 97 in Guía Gourmets. A Crianza that punches well above its category.
🥂 Raza 2022 — Carmelo Rodero, Ribera del Duero
The family’s newest wine, made from five hand-picked plots around Pedrosa de Duero as a tribute to the Rodero family. It’s one of three wines made in the rotating gravity tanks Carmelo designed and patented himself. 98 points in Guía Gourmets.
🥂 Pago de Valtarreña 2022 — Carmelo Rodero, Ribera del Duero
A single-plot Tempranillo, only made when the grapes are at their very best. This vintage scored a perfect 100 in Guía Proensa and 99 in Guía Gourmets. Brace yourself.
🥂 TSM 2021 — Carmelo Rodero, Ribera del Duero
The flagship blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and like the Pago it’s only made in the best vintages. 99 points in both Guía Proensa and Guía Gourmets, plus 94 Peñín. You get to taste it without buying a bottle blind.
YOUR HOST FOR THE EVENING
Alfonso Martínez of Carmelo Rodero will take us on a journey written with grape ink. He’ll tell the family story, from a 13-year-old tending vines to a winery in its own right. He’ll talk about the clay-limestone soils and harsh continental climate of Pedrosa de Duero. And he’ll explain the gravity winemaking: grapes never touch a hose or pump on their way to fermentation. Martha will be right there with him, asking which wines you love and why, and inviting anyone who fancies it to score their favourites. Questions are always encouraged.
