Time for Tempranillo 🇪🇸🍷

ONE GRAPE. FIVE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WINES.

Think you know Tempranillo? Most people picture one thing: a big, oaky red from Rioja. Spain’s most famous grape has a lot more to show you than that, and on 19 and 20 November Martha is pouring five bottles to prove it.

A white made from red grapes. A white Tempranillo. A rosé. Then two serious reds, one from Rioja and one from Ribera del Duero, side by side so you can taste the difference for yourself.

One grape. Five completely different glasses. Plenty to talk about.

🍷 THE LINEUP 🍷

🥂 El Cuentista 2022 — Pradorey, Ribera del Duero
We start with a trick. This wine is white, but it’s made from Tempranillo: the juice is pressed off the dark skins before it picks up any colour. It comes from a single plot on the Hoyo Dornajo estate at more than 800 metres, and only 7,395 bottles were made. Expect a few raised eyebrows.

🥂 Abel Mendoza Tempranillo Blanco 2023 — Abel Mendoza, Rioja
This time the grape itself is white. Abel Mendoza farms 42 small plots below the Sierra Cantabria, and he ferments this one in new French oak with wild yeasts, then leaves it on its lees for five months. Yellow plum, quince and a round, generous palate. Not your usual Rioja.

🥂 LC Rosé 2024 — López Cristóbal, Ribera del Duero
A family bodega in Roa blends Tinta del País (Ribera’s name for Tempranillo) with the local white grape Albillo Mayor. The result is fresh, fruity and very easy to love. Proof that Ribera does pink too.

🥂 Ukan 2019 — Ukan, Rioja Alavesa
Now for the big guns. Koldo Eguren, the fifth generation of a famous Rioja winemaking family, sources this wine from three old-vine plots in Laguardia planted in 1940, 1945 and 1966. It spends 16 months in French oak, and only around 15,000 bottles were made. This is Rioja at its most elegant.

🥂 Corimbo 2022 — Bodegas La Horra, Ribera del Duero
And the reply from Ribera. Organic bush vines around La Horra and Roa, never irrigated, then 14 months in French and American barrels. It’s darker and more muscular than Ukan, so you can line up Rioja against Ribera, glass for glass, and pick a side.
