The 3 R’s of Spain: Regions, Roots & Revival
REGIONS, ROOTS & REVIVAL — FIVE WINES THAT PROVE SPAIN IS SO MUCH MORE THAN RIOJA
Spain is so much more than Tempranillo and Rioja. Over two evenings, Martha takes you on a journey through the regions, native grapes and remarkable winemakers that make Spanish wine such an exciting world to explore — from ancient terraced vines and Atlantic whites to oak-aged classics and a bold new generation.
Five wines. Three R’s. One very good reason to fall in love with Spain all over again.
Because Spain doesn’t just make wine. Spain makes history, character and a little magic in a bottle. ❤️🍷
🍾 THE LINEUP 🍾
🥂 Laietà Opus 2019 — Alta Alella, Cava (Paratge Qualificat Vallcirera)
We open with Cava at its most serious. Organic Chardonnay and Pansa Blanca from a single classified site above Barcelona, aged a minimum of 36 months on its lees and sold freshly disgorged. This is the revival of Cava in a glass — and it will change what you think Spanish bubbles can be.
🥂 Pazo Señorans Colección — Pazo de Señoráns, Rías Baixas
The region where Spain meets the Atlantic. Pazo de Señoráns is a 16th-century Galician manor house turned winery, still in the hands of the family who released its first vintage in 1989. Pure Albariño — salty, bright and made for seafood.
🍷 Vel Uveyra — Ronsel do Sil, Ribeira Sacra
Roots, quite literally. Mencía grown on vertiginous terraces first carved by the Romans above the River Sil, from vines 30 to 60 years old and harvested entirely by hand. “Vel’uveyra” means “look at the vineyard” in Galician — and once you’ve seen those slopes, you’ll understand why.
🍷 Les Crestes — Mas Doix, Priorat
Priorat is one of Spain’s great revival stories, and Mas Doix is one of its standard-bearers. Carignan, Grenache and Syrah from slate hillsides, aged in a mix of concrete, large oak vats and used French barrels — so the fruit, not the wood, does the talking.
🍷 Selección Especial — Abadía Retuerta, VT Castilla y León
We finish with a rebel. Abadía Retuerta sits right on the Duero, just outside the Ribera del Duero boundary, and makes wine its own way. Selección Especial is built from the best of its separately vinified estate plots — Tempranillo with Syrah and friends — rich, polished and very hard to put down.
YOUR HOST
Martha has spent years travelling Spain’s wine regions and knocking on bodega doors so you don’t have to. She runs the room like a conversation, not a lecture — she wants to know which wines you love and why, she’ll ask guests to score their favourites and chat about which they preferred, and she makes you feel part of the whole experience. Join in as much or as little as you like. Questions are always encouraged.
