Meet the Winemaker: Begoña Jovellar
🍷 Meet the Winemaker: Begoña Jovellar
From 25 years at Vega Sicilia to a deeply personal new chapter — discover wines made with time, calmness and soul.
At Martha’s Vineyard, we are proud to welcome Begoña Jovellar as part of our Meet the Winemaker series — a rare opportunity to discover the wines and story of one of Spain’s most respected enologists.
After more than two decades working at the highest level of Spanish wine, including 25 years linked to Vega Sicilia, Begoña has turned her experience, precision and personal vision into something deeply her own: Bodegas Jovellar.
“Wines with time, calmness and soul. Wines of long ageing. To enjoy the waiting, to taste life.”
This is not just another tasting.
It is a chance to taste wines shaped by a woman who has spent a lifetime understanding vineyards, refining technique, and helping uphold the standards of some of Spain’s most legendary bottles.
🔬 A lifetime in wine
Born in Valladolid in 1966, Begoña built her career on a strong scientific foundation, studying Biological Sciences and Enology, before going on to work in vineyard research and clonal selection in Castilla y León.
Her name is most closely associated with Vega Sicilia, where she spent over twenty years working across some of the most prestigious wine regions and projects in Spain and beyond, including Ribera del Duero, Toro, Rioja and Tokaj.
Her work involved vineyard monitoring, microvinification, tasting, training, and protecting the identity and consistency that define truly iconic wines.
🌱 A personal new chapter
After decades contributing to great institutions, Begoña has now created her own project — one that reflects her own palate, her own philosophy, and her own legacy.
Bodegas Jovellar brings together carefully selected vineyards from some of Spain’s most characterful denominations, with a clear focus on wines of depth, detail and authenticity.
🍇 The wines
On the night, you’ll discover the beginning of this remarkable personal journey through her current wines:
🟡 A barrel-aged Verdejo from Rueda
A white with texture, character and quiet confidence — far removed from simple, easy-drinking styles. This is Verdejo with ambition: layered, gastronomic and built for the table.
🔴 A Ribera del Duero from Tempranillo
Elegant, polished and beautifully composed, with dark fruit, spice, freshness and structure. A Ribera with soul and restraint, rather than brute force.
And just as excitingly, her project is already looking ahead, with future wines planned from Rioja and Arlanza — a sign of a winemaker creating not just a label, but a personal map of Spanish terroir.
✨ Why this tasting matters
We meet a lot of people in wine.
Very few have a story like this.
Begoña represents that rare combination of scientific rigour, elite experience, and personal artistry.
She is one of those winemakers who has seen the inside of greatness — and then stepped away to build something more intimate, more personal, and perhaps even more meaningful.
This tasting is a chance to hear that story first-hand, to ask questions, and to taste wines that speak not just of place, but of patience, conviction and identity.
🥂 Join us
If you love Spanish wine, this is one of those evenings you really should not miss.
Come and meet the woman behind the project.
Hear the story.
Taste the wines.
And discover what happens when one of Spain’s most accomplished enologists finally creates something entirely her own.
📍 Places are limited, so booking is strongly recommended.
