Rare Grapes of Spain
THE INDIE BANDS OF SPANISH WINE
Everyone knows Tempranillo and Albariño. But what about Malvasía Volcánica, Prieto Picudo, or the forgotten field blends clinging to the slopes of the Ribeira Sacra?
Five wines. Five grapes you’ve probably never toasted with before.
These are the underdogs — the hidden gems quietly making some of Spain’s most exciting wines while the famous varieties soak up all the attention. Think of them as the indie bands of the wine world: once you discover them, you’ll wonder why they aren’t on everyone’s playlist.
🍾 THE LINEUP 🍾
🥂 Erupción Chinija Salvaje — Lanzarote
100% Malvasía Volcánica, grown in black volcanic ash on Lanzarote. Wild, saline and unlike anything else in Spain — a grape barely anyone outside the Canaries has tasted.
🥂 Santiago Ruiz — Rías Baixas
A hand-harvested Atlantic blend led by Albariño with its rarer Galician cousins alongside. Fresh, floral, and proof that Rías Baixas is about far more than one grape.
🥂 Prieto Picudo, Montespina — Tierra de León
A vivid pale rosé from Prieto Picudo — a variety grown almost nowhere else — off 25-year-old vines at 900 metres. Bright, tangy and criminally underrated.
🥂 Lalama — Ribeira Sacra
A symphony of indigenous varieties from the vertiginous Bibei valley. All freshness, perfume and mountain-grown character.
🥂 Sió Negre — Mallorca
100% Manto Negro, the native Mallorcan variety, from the oldest vines at Ca’n Ribas. Aromatic, fruit-forward and the perfect dark horse to close on — a grape almost no one has tasted.
