100% Tempranillo Blanco. From vineyards located in Sonsierra. Selected manual harvest in the winery. Fermented in new French oak barrels. Aged on its lees for 5 months in the same oak barrels with frequent stirring. The Abel Mendoza Tempranillo Blanco is the most mature of all the single-varietal wines from the San Vicente de la Sonsierra winery, not only in degree, but also in aromas and sensations in the mouth.
The grapes used to make it come from young vines. It was fermented in oak barrels with wild yeasts and matured in the same wood for five months with periodic stirring of the lees.
According to Abel Mendoza himself, white Tempranillo is the roundest and most pleasant variety of all those he grows, with good maturity and a soft and accommodating mouth. Abel himself looked for vineyards in which the grapes would not ripen excessively and would not offer excessively high yields, both factors that explain the quality of the grapes and, therefore, the wine. This made the wine less concentrated than in many other cases of similar wines and maintained part of the natural freshness of the grapes. White Tempranillo is the first variety to be harvested and always shows an interesting play between sweet and bitter flavors. In years without water scarcity the wine is fluid and relaxed, while in hot years it shows a somewhat more tannic side. Its aromas are always reminiscent of yellow fruit, although its true strength lies on the palate.
The Abel Mendoza Winery is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a town with a great winemaking tradition. Although in the beginning it was dedicated to the production of young wines using the carbonic maceration technique, it currently focuses on the production of aged wines.
In 1998, the concern to obtain wines with a more complex elaboration led him to change direction and he began to carry out different vinifications of both whites and reds.
Its vineyards, a total of 20 hectares, are located on the left bank of the Ebro River, under the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria. Currently, it has 42 small plots in which the harvest is done manually. The terrain is rugged and of varied composition, combining clay-calcareous, sandy and stony soils.
With the aim of making wines with their own personality that last over time, Abel Mendoza takes care of and monitors the vineyard throughout the year, applying the necessary care and respecting the environment as much as possible.
The brands sold by the winery are Jarrarte and Abel Mendoza. Although also small productions of varietals such as Tempranillo and Graciano, manually destemmed.
