Arx is the bottle I open when I want to surprise someone. Nobody expects a red this polished to come from Cádiz, and the look on their faces when I tell them it’s from Arcos de la Frontera never gets old.
It’s Bodega Tesalia’s crianza, and the star of the blend is Tintilla de Rota, an old local grape the Golding family have championed since they planted their vineyard at the foot of the Sierra de Grazalema. Syrah, Petit Verdot and a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon fill it out. The grapes are hand-picked at night to keep them cool, each variety is fermented on its own, and the wine then spends a year in French oak barrels.
In the glass it’s a deep purple with a violet rim. The nose opens with blackberry, boysenberry and blackcurrant, then cocoa, vanilla, cedar and a few bitter herbs as it breathes. On the palate it’s lively and fresh, with real acidity, smooth tannins, juicy dark fruit and a long, gently spicy finish.
Give it a little air and serve it with slow-roasted lamb, a char-grilled entrecôte or a wedge of cured Payoyo cheese from the same Sierra.
