If you love a rich, buttery Chardonnay in the Californian style but wince at the prices, this is the one I point you to. People are always surprised it comes from just outside Toledo.
The Muñoz family farm around 100 hectares at Noblejas, on the high plain of La Mancha. Winters are cold, summers are hot and dry, and there’s barely any rain but nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. The soils are poor, shallow marl, so the vines give small crops of very concentrated grapes. The wine is named after grandfather Blas, the family’s founding figure. The Chardonnay is fermented in French and American oak barrels and then left there for about eight months to round out. Its first vintages won gold at the Chardonnay du Monde competition, which put this corner of Castilla on the map for white wine.
In the glass it’s a deep, glowing gold. The nose has ripe peach, pineapple and baked apple, then vanilla, butter and toasted hazelnut from the oak. On the palate it’s full and creamy but still fresh, with flavours of yellow apple, citrus and a little spice, and a long, toasty finish.
Have it with grilled scallops, garlic prawns, hake in a creamy sauce or roast chicken. A soft, runny cheese works beautifully too.
