If you only try one of these, I’d make it this one. It’s the most aromatic of the reds and the easiest to hand to somebody who doesn’t want a lecture — a Rioja is a Rioja, right up until you tell them where it’s been.
It’s 100% Tempranillo from Laguardia, in the Rioja Alavesa. Both the alcoholic and the malolactic fermentation happen in 225-litre French oak barrels at low temperature over a fortnight, with the cap worked four or five times a day, followed by nine months in new French oak. Then the bottles are sealed with red wax and lowered twenty-four metres into the Mediterranean off Alicante for another nine months.
Dark red with violet at the edge. Powerful on the nose — dark stewed fruit, liquorice, tobacco and spice — and the producers say the vanilla and roasted coffee only really appeared once the wine came back up. Ripe red and black fruit in abundance on the palate, the acidity sitting exactly where it should, and for a wine with this much ripeness it stays genuinely fresh.
14–16°C, and it’s worth opening ahead. Roast poultry, anything grilled, a slow stew on a cold evening — it’s forgiving enough to carry most of a Sunday lunch.
