Could this be one of the most attractive wines from Castilla? Possibly. Could it be one of the tastiest coupages? It could be that as well. But most importantly, Sospechoso Blanco will take away any doubts and will certainly leave an impression on you.
Sospechoso Blanco is the latest great success by brothers Marcos and Miguel Eguren who have joined forces with Uvas Felices to create this wine. What they don’t know is that it’s us who are really happy to find this kind of wine, one that is young and dry, made with grapes from Manchuela, in Castilla-La Mancha. What began with his great-grandfather Amancio selling his wine in the villages of La Rioja has now turned into one of the most representative companies in Spain, with wineries in La Rioja (Sierra Cantabria, Señorío de San Vicente, Viñedos de Páganos), in Castilla-La Mancha (Dominio de Eguren) and Toro (Teso La Monja). With all this experience, it was no surprise that Uvas Felices, which was set up in 1998 with the aim of recovering old vineyards and abandoned vines, would take notice of this perfect partnership of brothers.
The result of this collaboration is this trio of Sospechoso wines, including Sospechoso Blanco, which is a blend of Macabeo, Verdejo and Airén. All these varieties come from old vineyards (between 30 and 70 years old) planted in Manchuela. In this area, in the province of Cuenca (between the Júcar and Cabriel rivers), there is an abundance of clay soils that work well for water storage. These reserves help the vines to cope with the continental climate, which is slightly tempered in summer by the humid Mediterranean winds and the temperature contrasts between night and day.
Sospechoso Blanco is vinified in the Viñedo de Páganos wineries in La Rioja (also owned by the Eguren brothers). At the beginning of the process, the Sospechoso Blanco clusters undergo a selection process, where only the best berries will go onto the next phase, in the destemmer. Once all the stalks have been removed, Sospechoso Blanco is pressed and the grape pulp (including the skins) is left to macerate for 9 hours. After this time, and with the appropriate pressing, Sospechoso Blanco spends as many hours resting in a stainless steel tank, so that all the particles and elements that might later cloud the fermentation process (which is spontaneous, with temperature control and using native yeasts) will precipitate and fall to the bottom. Finally, a little cold stabilisation and bottling are the final steps for Sospechoso Blanco before being released for sale, beautiful, ready and perfect to be tasted at any time and on any occasion.
Happiness has never been so close…
Sospechoso Blanco 2022 is a wine distinguished by its vibrancy and youthful character. Upon pouring, it unfurls delightful fragrances reminiscent of tropical fruits (pineapple, passion fruit) and ripe fruits (banana, apple, melon) set against a backdrop of invigorating citrus notes. On the palate, it offers a harmonious acidity paired with flavours of white fruits and citrus that linger. An approachable and straightforward white wine, perfect for savouring at any given opportunity.
