Albariño wine elaborated in Rias Baixas. The history of the winery is closely linked to the Monastery of Santa María de Oia. The Cistercian Monastery of Santa María la Real de Oia offers a magnificent location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, in a rocky inlet, between the towns of A Guardia and Baiona. This monastery began to be built in the year 1136 under the reign of Alfonso VII.
According to a Cistercian chronicler of the Congregation of Castilla, the monastery of Oia is the only one of the Order that stands on the shores of the Atlantic. The façade of its temple and the monasterial dependencies on the western side are located on the edge of the sea.
The remains of a spur or boardwalk are preserved a few meters from the shore, whose walls open up in the central part of the cove, and which formed a small passageway with an outgoing and incoming way for fishing boats, which could be covered with a net or wooden palisade. The port area, called “camboa”, was used as a fishing system and also protected the boats and lessened the force and beating of the waves against the sea.
The vineyards (12 hectares) and leased farms under technical control of the winery are located in what is mostly granite soil with some farms on slate schist soil. The grape variety is Albariño (100%)
