About The Wine

Strong and brave. Loving and tender. A place to rest, where you don’t feel afraid. An oasis in the middle of the daily maelstrom. A stop on the way. That’s how grandmothers are.

The least, deserves a prize. In the case of the Villota wineries, this tribute has come in the form of a vineyard name. The protagonist: Genara Villota, grandmother of Carmen Pérez Garrigues (current manager of the wineries), who has given its name to Viña Gena, the oldest plot of land on the estate. This land -with vines of more than 90 years of Tempranillo- was planted in 1930 by Ricardo Pérez Pérez (Carmen’s great-grandfather) when he returned from Chile. Today, a real gem. There, in the heart of the D.O.Ca. Rioja, Villota Viña Gena Viñedo Singular was born, a red where quality prevails over quantity.

Taking this into account, the yield is not very high, but it becomes a guarantee that Villota Viña Gena Viñedo Singular – produced in the Rioja Alavesa, in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, on the banks of the Ebro – is always classified as excellent.

The superiority of Villota Viña Gena Viñedo Singular is finished off in the cellar, aging for one year in French oak barrels complemented by aging in concrete tanks.

Many in the shade. Other recognized; but all of them always at the foot of the canyon, behind each achievement and ready to lift when the fall comes. Behind Villota Viña Gena Viñedo Singular – quite an achievement – is Genara Villota. A recognition to the matriarch of this family. A tribute to all the grandmothers in the world.
