An Evening with Bodegas Figuero: Antonio García in Moraira
ONE NIGHT ONLY: THE BODEGA COMES TO MORAIRA
Bodegas Figuero farms old Tinto Fino vines in one village: La Horra, in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Some of those vines were planted in 1910. On Thursday 12 November, Antonio García from the bodega joins us at Martha’s Vineyard to pour five of their wines, from the village bottle all the way up to Tinus.
Five wines. One grape. One village. Five very different stories.
This is a single evening with the person behind the bottles, and there’s only room for 16 of us. If you’ve ever wondered why Ribera del Duero wines from great single vineyards cost what they do, this is your chance to taste the answer.
🍾 THE LINEUP 🍾
🥂 Figuero 2022 — Bodegas Figuero, Ribera del Duero
The village wine, and the best place to start. It comes from Figuero’s own vineyards in La Horra, planted between 1945 and 1995. This is Tinto Fino the way the bodega sees it: balanced, modern and made to be enjoyed.
🥂 Figuero Viñas Viejas 2021 — Bodegas Figuero, Ribera del Duero
One of our shop favourites. It’s a vino de paraje from the Zaloña area, made from vines planted between 1910 and 1965 on clay-silt soils. Some of those vines are over a century old, and you can taste the depth that brings.
🥂 Milagros 2020 — Bodegas Figuero, Ribera del Duero
The family made this wine as a homage to their mother. It comes from old vines (1940–1965) in the Camino de los Frailes area, looking out over the Duero, on sandy soils full of river stones. This is the most elegant wine of the night.
🥂 Pago de Torrosillo 2019 — Bodegas Figuero, Ribera del Duero
A single plot that gives the wine its name. It was planted in 1950 on clay with a seam of limestone running through it. The limestone gives this Tinto Fino a lift and freshness you won’t forget.
🥂 Tinus 2019 — Bodegas Figuero, Ribera del Duero
The crown jewel. Tinus comes from Malasmañanas, a single vineyard with vines more than 70 years old. The grapes are picked by hand and fermented with wild yeasts in open 500-litre French oak barrels. It sells for over €250 a bottle, so this is your chance to taste it without buying one blind. Antonio is bringing it himself.
YOUR HOST FOR THE EVENING
Antonio García is coming from Bodegas Figuero to take us through the wines in person. He’ll talk about the vineyards, the soils and the people behind them, and explain why one village and one grape can taste so different from bottle to bottle. Questions are always encouraged.
