About this wine

PICAPINOS CRIANZA 2023

I opened this one expecting a straightforward Ribera and got something considerably more interesting. It has the depth you want from the Duero, but there’s a freshness and a lift to it that I wasn’t ready for — and it’s been quietly disappearing off the shelf ever since I put it there.

It comes from the Yllera family, who have been making wine in Castilla y León for five generations, and it’s their Ribera del Duero project rather than the Rueda whites most people know them for. Tempranillo leads, with a little Cabernet Sauvignon for backbone and a splash of Albillo Mayor — the local white grape that old Ribera growers have always co-planted with their reds. What makes it different is the ageing: twelve months split three ways, with most of it in used French oak, a small portion in new barrels, and around a seventh of the wine resting in clay amphorae. That amphora fraction is the trick — it keeps the fruit bright and stops the oak from taking over.

In the glass it’s a bright cherry red with violet edges, medium depth rather than opaque. Red fruit comes first, then darker blackberry underneath, with a herbal, faintly stony note running through it and just enough spice and cedar from the barrels. It’s dry, the tannins and acidity sit in balance, and the finish is long and fresh with a sweet echo of fruit at the end.

Perfect with lamb chops off the grill, a plate of jamón and aged manchego, or a Sunday roast with all the trimmings.

Meet the winemaker

Bodegas Yllera

The Yllera family have been making wine in Castilla y León for five generations, best known for their Rueda whites but quietly serious about Ribera del Duero. Picapinos is their most personal red — a deliberate step away from the big, oaky Ribera style, with a share of the wine aged in clay amphorae to keep the fruit alive. It is the bottle they point to when they want to show what they can really do.
