A Tour of Spanish Winter Wines
FIVE REGIONS. FIVE WINES. MADE FOR COLDER NIGHTS.
The evenings are drawing in, the jumpers are coming out, and it’s time to swap the poolside whites for wines with a bit more warmth and weight. So we’re going on a tour — five wines from five corners of Spain, each one chosen for the colder nights ahead.
Five wines. Five cheeses. One very cosy evening.
We start high in the mountains of Catalonia, drop down to Requena, swing back to Montsant, then head north to Rioja and finish in the heart of Ribera del Duero. No passport needed.
🍾 THE LINEUP 🍾
🥂 Cérvoles Blanc 2023 — Cérvoles, D.O. Costers del Segre
A serious mountain white from high Catalonia. Chardonnay and Macabeo give it real richness and texture — the kind of white that converts people who “only drink red”. Our opening stop, and a proper winter white.
🥂 Impromptu Sauvignon Blanc 2024 — Bodegas Hispano+Suizas, D.O. Utiel-Requena
Forget everything you think you know about Sauvignon Blanc. This one is fermented in barrel, which gives it a roundness and depth you won’t expect — mineral, tropical and far richer than the usual crisp-and-zesty style.
🥂 Dido La Solució Rosa 2023 — Venus La Universal, D.O. Montsant
Rosé in winter? Absolutely — when it’s this one. Pale as Provence, deep as a great wine, and made from five grape varieties. A serious, age-worthy rosé that will change your mind about what pink wine can do.
🥂 Senderos de Ukan 2021 — UKAN, D.O.Ca. Rioja
The second wine from the UKAN estate, made from old-vine Tempranillo — vines averaging around 50 years old — and aged 12 months in French oak. Wine Advocate gave it 92 points. Light on its feet yet full-bodied, and very elegant.
🥂 Alonso del Yerro 2021 — Viñedos Alonso del Yerro, D.O. Ribera del Duero
Our final stop: 100% Tinto Fino, aged in French oak. Ripe red fruit, blackberry and a touch of liquorice — classic Ribera done with real elegance. Exactly what a cold night calls for.
